Rarotonga
Even though the main island of Rarotonga is the largest in the Cook Islands, it is just 20 miles around, and easy to circumnavigate, by bike or by car, at any point during your vacation. Rarotonga has only two main roads. The "Island Bus" can take you around, or you can rent a bike, car, or jeep.
Rarotonga is of volcanic origin, with fertile mountains rising to 2,000ft. Almost entirely protected by a reef, Rarotonga’s white sand beaches, tropical vegetation and lush flowers border a shimmering blue lagoon. With abundant marine life and a variety of ways to view it, Rarotonga is a jewel of an island.
Aitutaki
Just over 160 miles north and approximately a one hour flight from Rarotonga, Aitutaki is the second most visited island in the Cooks. Take a cruise on the glorious lagoon, hand feed the diversely colorful marine life and hire a moped to explore the heights and valleys of the island of your own accord.
It is arguably the South Pacific's most arresting coral atoll, with a ring of islets enclosing a vast central lagoon. It also has one high island, which is an extraordinary feature on any atoll, where the islets are commonly on level ground.
Aitutaki may be visited as a day trip by air from Rarotonga, but to genuinely appreciate its tranquility, a vacation stay of several days is suggested.
